I didn’t plan this one out very well. We originally planned to go from Elephant Butte, NM to Tombstone, AZ, however we couldn’t get into the Tombstone campground we wanted until a later date. So we decided to check out the Silver City, NM area for a few days. That was not long enough.
The campground was on the edge of town but still close to Walmart and restaurants. It was far enough off the highway to make it a quiet environment. The sites were a bit snug but there were trees between sites, along with a wood/log fence area, I think to be used as a patio. Hookups and water pressure were good. Easy in and out. We were in site 64.
Our greeter at the office was very friendly and helpful. She handed us a list of places/locations in town that covered anything we might need, e.g. grocery store, car wash, propane, tire shop. She also gave us a map of the downtown area and Points of Interest to see outside of town. The campground was nicely decorated with a ranch theme – a windmill, water tower, old farm equipment. It’s also right next to the Old Silver City Cemetery, established 1882, where Billy the Kid’s mother is buried.
During the few days we were there, we visited a couple of good restaurants, drove to the Gila (pronounced HEE-la) Cliff Dwellings, and watched the Lighted Christmas Parade in downtown Silver City. We didn’t have time to go to the Catwalk Recreation Area or the City of Rocks State Park. Again, bad planning on my part! Read more in my blog.
