Gulf State Park is a very large campground, 400+ sites, and it is very well maintained. Our campsite was 1.5 miles from the entrance. Clean bathrooms and a large laundry room overlooking the lake. They even have recycling, which we’ve found is rare for a campground.
The state park is huge and a bicyclist’s dream. Miles and miles of trails for biking or walking. There are three lakes for water activities. The men enjoyed bass fishing on several occasions. The white sugar-sand beach is just across the highway. We only got to enjoy beach time one of the days, out of the 13 days we were there. The temperatures didn’t cooperate.
On one of our rainy days, we drove to Mobile, AL and toured the USS Alabama Battleship and the USS Drum submarine. The self-guided tour took about 4 hours to complete.
We found some fun entertainment and live music at Flora-Bama. If you’re not easily offended, go see Big Earl. He says he’s been playing at Flora-Bama for 30 years and has only been fired 18 times. Good laughs - *if you’re not easily offended*!
We sat outside with a fire on Christmas morning. On New Years Eve day we visited the Ice House Taproom, Mud Bugs, the Pink Pony Pub and the World’s Tiniest Hooters. It was an enjoyable day and we were home by 10PM.
