We chose the Carlsbad KOA campground because it was a good middle location to travel to Carlsbad Caverns and the town of Roswell. We stayed for five days. The sites were spacious enough and the campground wasn't full. We didn't have an end-of-the-row site, we were 3 in, but we got lucky again and didn't have any neighbors in the first two sites! Every day they smoke meat and offer dinners for purchase of brisket, ribs, sausage and turkey. You place your order and pick your time slot between 3-5:30PM and they deliver it to your camper. Unfortunately, we were out and about too much to take advantage of that.
There was a dirt road/trail from the campground that went to Brantley Lake. We used the Rzr to take a little ride to the lake.
This stay started on a sad note. Chuck's brother, back in Minnesota, passed away from Covid the day we arrived. We didn't find out until the next day. It's even sadder to realize that he could probably still be with us if he would've been vaccinated.
That day was also our 5th anniversary. We looked for a place in Carlsbad to have a nice dinner and chose a Japanese restaurant for sushi. The web site said "Open" but when we arrived, it was not. There were several cars in the parking lot and people going into the building next door so we followed. It was Cal's Shade Western/restaurant, a bar & grill and bowling alley. So our anniversary dinner was a cheese burger and fries (which were fabulous) - and it was still great!
